Summer is...here?
So it is the first Tuesday off for the summer, and it just feels weird. Co-op is a highlight of the week for us, and 12+ weeks off is a little daunting. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the break! But when it's one of the only times of the week when my kids get to have their own time with friends and away from each other...well, we miss it pretty quickly! :) We LOVE our family time. We have a blast together and enjoy the break from school work. But I have to admit, I miss my adult time with other mamas as much as they miss their friends. It's like a little pick me up from the insanity and a much needed change of pace.
Suffice it to say, I adore our co-op. Lighthouse Christian Academy is so much more than a time for academics. My friends share our joys, tears, hopes and concerns. They understand because they are there going through the same kind of stuff. I may take them for granted sometimes. I know there are some Tuesdays that co op just seems like a big pain, and I'd rather stay home with my family in our pajamas. But when summer comes, we miss our Lighthouse family. And September will be very welcome around here by then!

The Passage of Time...
How did this sweet angelic little baby...
that grew into this sassy little toddler...
who tortured her baby sister...
but adored her baby cousins...
become this beautiful...
hard-working...
talented...
confident young woman, graduating with honors, and heading off to college to pursue her dream of nursing?
Alli Rose, I am so very proud of you. You have overcome struggles and obstacles that I wish you had never had to deal with. And yet, because of the hardships, you have grown into a young woman that I have no doubt will be able to handle all that life may throw at you. Through it all, you still smile, laugh, give, love and strive to leave the world a better place. I can't tell you how many prayers I have prayed over the years for you, and I am so thankful to see the Father hears and answers. He has grown you into this beautiful creature, inside and out, and I know He holds your future with care. We couldn't be there to celebrate with you, but you can be certain that we are celebrating your success, even from 1,600 miles away.
Love, Aunt Ammy

A TOS Review: Words Bright
If your family is like mine, you have bookshelves galore. Books stuffed in every nook and cranny. Board books stacked precariously, ultimately toppled by grubby hands of book-loving toddlers. Chapter books strewn about with pages lovingly folded over marking places. And of course, the neverending supply of schoolbooks. It seems like there is always someone telling me they have nothing to read...and I try hard to cheerfully ask, "Have you checked the bookshelf?" This has just recently started with my first grader. He runs out of reading material very quickly, or so he believes. He wants to be a big boy like his siblings and read to the little ones, but sometimes it's hard to find one he can handle all on his own and keep the attention of the two year old. That's why when TOS sent us A New Take on ABC's - S is for Smiling Sunrise from WordsBright, I knew he would be pleased.
WordsBright is a new publisher based in California whose goal is to develop vibrant and engaging children's books that educate as well as entertain. The author of Smiling Sunrise, Vick Wadhwa, wanted to give his two year old daughter an alternative to the traditional "A - apple" alphabet books, so he developed a book with simple poems for each letter. He believes that toddlers are able and eager to learn more words than we may typically expose them to, as well as learn about character-building concepts even at this young age.
While it is a great book to read to little ones, this book can be used with older children, too. It is actually recommended for preK to 3rd grade. The learning guide available gives you opportunities to have discussions with your older children about the concepts introduced throughout the book, For example, when learning about butterflies, the learning guide prompts you to ask your child questions like, "Have you ever touched a butterfly? Is it hard or soft? Isn't it wonderful that a butterfly's wings are so soft, and yet strong enough to fly?" One of my favorite things about this book is that it gives early readers an opportunity to shine by reading to younger siblings.
They have also created a song set to the "Twinkle Twinkle" music to download as a supplement. Our review cam with the song on cd, and we listened to it a few times. We actually preferred to read the book rather than listen to the song. While the book is in poem form, it definitely did not fit into the song very well, and I found it kind of off-putting. The poems aren't actually poems, either. Occasionally, the words and timing come together to give you a rhythm, but we found it easier to read it as prose rather than poetry.
The pictures in the book are vibrant and beautiful. Castle loved having it read to him, but he would also sit on his own and just look at the pictures. I think the pages are pretty durable, too - which is a huge bonus to a mom with little kids! One of my biggest stresses in life is a book with torn pages. :)
Something I found funny about Castle's reaction to the book: his insistence that he knew what was in the picture! When we got to the page G is for Gift - Castle saw it and immediately said, "Present, Mama, present!" I told him that it was G for Gift, and he said, "Yeah, G for present!" He did the same thing for I - Infant. I told him I is for Infant, and he said, "I is Baby!" Sigh...now, for normal children, this probably won't be an issue...but I've never claimed to have normal children! ;)
I think S is for Sunrise is a good introductory book for this upstart company WordsBright. I will definitely have my eye out for their next book due out in 2016.

Throwback Thursday
These two boys sure have changed a bunch, but one thing hasn't changed - they have this girl wrapped around their ornery fingers! Love my goofy oldest son and my silly favorite nephew! (He's my only nephew, but he says that wouldn't matter - he just might be right!)

A TOS Review: A+ Interactive Math
Have you ever wondered where your kids were in their math skills? Sure, they can make good grades on their daily work, and they seem to be doing ok on their tests. But do you wonder if they are really learning? Are you afraid you've missed something? Are you SURE they've missed something? Your concern most likely has to do with a learning gap - something that you believe has been covered in a curriculum, but possibly missed, or skipped, or presented in a different order, thus leaving a gap in your child's math skills and hindering their grasp of new concepts. I know I certainly have. That is why I was so thrilled to be able to review A+ Interactive Math by Tutorsoft. We were chosen to review the Adaptive Placement Test with Individualized Lesson Plans portion of their program for all four of our school aged children.
We began by having the kids take placement tests. Each grade level has multiple tests. Each test focuses on a specific skill set, such as addition or subtraction, fractions or algebra. Some tests are approximately 30 questions, some are only about 12. Depending on how the student scored, the computer will either congratulate them and tell them they are at grade level on this concept, or it will let them know they have some work to do on the concept direct them to "individualized lesson plans". After watching a video on a missed concept, the student will have an interactive Q&A session. If there is more practice needed, you can generate worksheets for the student. Once you believe he is ready, you can have him take the placement test again.
Of course, depending on grade level, you may be overwhelmed by the number of tests to be taken. If you know what your child has been working through in their curriculum, you will probably have a general idea where to start and what to focus on. As for me, I've been pretty hands-off with math for the older two this last year. The kids have been using a math program that is self grading, and all I've been doing is checking their scores. Because of this, I wasn't exactly certain what all had been covered and what they may have missed this last semester. So with Connor and Chloe, we have just taken our time, going through each concept and seeing where they are needing improvement. With Canon and Caleb, I had a better sense of where they were - or should be - and went with that. I still am having all four of them take every placement test since we have the opportunity to see every base covered.
It is fun for Canon and Caleb to see their men marching farther along the progress line! |
As stated before, after taking the placement tests, you receive a pass/fail type message. When you need improvement on a concept, you are referred to the "individualized" lesson plan pages. This is where I found the one thing I didn't care for about the program. The lessons were NOT individualized. For example, if your child takes the fraction placement test and isn't at grade level, you are directed to the lesson plan page for fractions. Even though your child may understand adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators, they may not understand how to invert the second fraction in order to divide. Unfortunately, the lesson plans are not that specific. If the child is not at grade level according to the Placement Test, EVERY lesson regarding fractions is put into their lesson plan: adding same denominator, subtracting different denominator, dividing fractions, converting fractions to decimals and so on and so forth. I wish the computer would have evaluated the tests, found where the weakness lies within that concept, and developed a lesson plan to strengthen the student in that specific area. Just saying they aren't at grade level in fractions when there are SO MANY concepts to learn about fractions is a little discouraging.
A portion of concepts in one subject area |
I loved it from a teacher's perspective because I could view their summary reports and progress reports and see those gaps I was concerned about being filled. The kids loved being able to see their pages turn from blue (not taken) to red (not at grade level) to green (at grade level, SUCCESS!).
SUCCESS! Caleb's at grade level in every first grade concept! Onward and Upward! |
He was very proud of his accomplishments - so was Mama! |
When you stop and think how much there is to know about math, it can seem overwhelming. When you have to stop and think how to teach all those concepts to your children, you may start to hyperventilate! A+ Interactive Math could be a great assist for you in this area where so many parents feel weak. It will engage your student, motivate them to work on a concept until they are feeling confident in their ability, and give them a sense of accomplishment when they see the progress they have made. I am looking forward to seeing even more improvement in my children's math abilities with A+ Interactive Math.
Mr. Monkey rewards you for a job well done! |
